When people think of the Mediterranean they typically think of the South of France, the Amalfi Coast and the well-known Greek islands. All fantastic places. But also expensive ones. The interesting thing is that the Mediterranean is much larger than its famous destinations and contains a wealth of places that offer the same sun, sea and culture at a fraction of the price.
Morocco, the North African coast
Morocco is technically not the Mediterranean but it is Mediterranean weather and Mediterranean atmosphere in world-class form at a price that is hard to beat. Essaouira on the Atlantic and Tetouan and Al Hoceima along the Mediterranean coast are all fantastic alternatives to the well-known European destinations. Flights from northern Europe take around 4 hours and no visa is required for EU citizens.
Accommodation in Morocco: From approx. 💚 24 EUR/night (riad) · 🟡 70 EUR/night (boutique riad with pool) · 🔴 148 EUR/night (luxury riad)
Albania and Montenegro, the Adriatic
Albania and Montenegro are the two most underrated Adriatic destinations. Both countries offer dramatic coastal scenery, beautiful beaches and historic towns at prices significantly lower than the better-known Croatian coast. Albania's Saranda and Montenegro's Kotor are both excellent bases for exploring the region.
Accommodation in Albania and Montenegro: From approx. 💚 21 EUR/night (guesthouse) · 🟡 60 EUR/night (boutique hotel) · 🔴 128 EUR/night (luxury hotel)
Crete and Rhodes, Greece
Greece is not always cheap but Crete and Rhodes are significantly more affordable than Mykonos and Santorini and deliver on almost every measure. Crete has Europe's most impressive gorge hike, Minoan ruins and world-class beaches. Rhodes has a UNESCO World Heritage medieval town and a coastline that stretches for miles. Both islands are best visited in May and September.
Accommodation on Crete and Rhodes: From approx. 💚 29 EUR/night (guesthouse) · 🟡 75 EUR/night (boutique hotel) · 🔴 161 EUR/night (luxury resort)
Tunisia, the North African Riviera
Tunisia is a Mediterranean gem that far too few people visit. White sandy beaches at Hammamet and Djerba, the UNESCO-listed old city of Tunis, and an authentic Arab atmosphere that is hard to find anywhere else so close to Europe. Flights from northern Europe take around 3 hours and the price level is one of the lowest in the entire Mediterranean region.
Accommodation in Tunisia: From approx. 💚 19 EUR/night (guesthouse) · 🟡 51 EUR/night (beach hotel) · 🔴 107 EUR/night (luxury resort)
