April is one of the most underrated months to travel. The weather is good across most popular destinations, tourist crowds have not yet arrived in full force and prices are significantly lower than in June, July and August. If you have the flexibility to travel in April you are actually sitting on a fantastic opportunity to get a lot more trip for your money.
Santorini, Greece
Santorini in April is something genuinely special. Temperatures sit steadily at 18 to 22 degrees Celsius, the whitewashed houses and blue domes are untouched by summer crowds and you can actually walk the trail from Fira to Oia without fighting for space with hundreds of other people. Prices are typically 30 to 40 percent lower than in July and August, and the atmosphere is calm and authentic in a way that is simply hard to find in the summer months. The views over the caldera are just as beautiful as the photos you have seen, and you get to enjoy them without queueing behind a wall of selfie sticks.
Accommodation in April: From approx. 💚 40 EUR/night (guesthouse) · 🟡 95 EUR/night (boutique hotel) · 🔴 200 EUR/night (caldera resort)
Morocco
Morocco in April is close to perfect. Temperatures in Marrakech and along the coast sit at 22 to 28 degrees Celsius, the skies are almost entirely clear and there is next to no rain. You can explore the souks in Marrakech, hike in the Atlas Mountains while the peaks still have snow on them, take a trip out to the Sahara and sleep under the stars from a desert camp, or get lost in the ancient medina of Fes which is the oldest in the world. Morocco consistently surprises people visiting for the first time, and the flight from northern Europe is only around 4 hours.
Accommodation in April: From approx. 💚 27 EUR/night (riad in medina) · 🟡 80 EUR/night (boutique riad with pool) · 🔴 160 EUR/night (luxury riad)
Japan during cherry blossom season
Early April is cherry blossom season in Japan and it is one of the most sought-after travel experiences in the world. Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka are all covered in pink and white blossoms and the festive atmosphere from the hanami tradition is infectious in a way that is genuinely hard to describe. It is not the cheapest trip you will ever take and you need to book well in advance, but for those trips you remember for the rest of your life Japan in April is a very strong contender. Flight time from Europe is around 12 to 14 hours with a stopover.
Accommodation in April: From approx. 💚 47 EUR/night (hostel or capsule hotel) · 🟡 107 EUR/night (traditional ryokan) · 🔴 241 EUR/night (luxury ryokan)
Algarve, Portugal
Algarve is Europe's best-kept April secret. With 20 to 23 degrees Celsius and up to 8 hours of sunshine it is entirely possible to spend the day on the beach or sailing along the iconic cliffside coast at Benagil and Ponta da Piedade. Prices are well below summer levels, flights from northern Europe take around 3.5 hours and Portugal is generally one of the most affordable countries to travel in across the continent. A meal at a local restaurant rarely costs more than what you would pay for a simple snack back home, and the local wines are genuinely excellent.
Accommodation in April: From approx. 💚 51 EUR/night (guesthouse) · 🟡 100 EUR/night (boutique hotel) · 🔴 188 EUR/night (resort with pool)
Thailand, the southern islands
If you want to go to Thailand but do not want to pay December prices or share the beach with half of Europe, April is a very solid choice. Islands in the south like Koh Lanta and Koh Samui still have good weather before the rainy season properly sets in, prices are 20 to 30 percent lower than in the winter months and there is a relaxed quality to the islands that is hard to find during the busy high season. The water is clear, the coral is healthy and the sea turtles are still around. It is Thailand on its own terms.
Accommodation in April: From approx. 💚 24 EUR/night (guesthouse) · 🟡 67 EUR/night (bungalow resort) · 🔴 148 EUR/night (private pool villa)
